REGISTRATION OF OVERSEAS ELECTORS 2010

1. As directed by the Prime Minister, the Elections Department has revised the Registers of Electors that were certified in 2009. The revised Registers, known as the 2010 Registers, list the names of all Singapore citizens who are qualified to be electors as on 1 February 2010. From 23 February 2010 onwards, overseas Singaporeans whose names are listed in the 2010 Registers, may apply to be registered as overseas electors, if they have resided in Singapore for a total of at least 30 days during the 3-year period between 1 February 2007 and 31 January 2010. Registration will remain open except during the election period beginning from the day when the writ for an election is issued and ending on polling day.

2. For more details on the qualifying criteria and how to apply to be registered as an overseas elector, please visit our website at www.elections.gov.sg.

3. Do apply for registration as an overseas elector early if you meet the qualifying criteria and wish to cast your vote at one of the 9 Singapore Missions designated as overseas polling stations in the next elections. If you had been registered as an overseas elector before 1 February 2010, your registration will expire when the 2010 Registers of Electors are certified and come into operation. You will therefore have to submit a fresh application for registration if you wish to remain as an overseas elector.

The swine flu which originated in Mexico appears to be spreading. According to media reports, there have been todate 81 deaths in Mexico (comprising 20 confirmed cases and 61 suspected cases); and reports of about two dozen confirmed and suspected cases have surfaced in the US, New Zealand, Spain, France, Israel, Canada and Scotland. The WHO has warned of the potential of the swine flu becoming an international pandemic.

Singaporeans in Australia should pay close attention to the advice of the local health authorities on the situation. Singapore's Ministry of Health has issued the following advisory:

Members of the public are advised to postpone or avoid non-essential travel to Mexico. In the event that travel to Mexico is unavoidable, the public is advised to take precautionary measures such as avoiding crowded areas, coming into contact with sick persons and maintaining high standards of personal hygiene at all times.

Members of the public are also advised to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms of swine flu within seven days of travel to California, Texas or Kansas in USA, or to Mexico. They should also disclose their travel histories to their doctors.

The public should maintain high standards of personal hygiene, such as washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially after contact with respiratory secretions (e.g. after sneezing and coughing). Those who are sick with respiratory illnesses should avoid crowded areas and wear masks if possible.

Should Singaporeans have any queries, they should contact the Singapore High Commission in Canberra at (+61) (2) 6271 2000 or the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office at (+65) 63798800.

TSL END-OF-SEMESTER GATHERING & AGM!

Dear all,
on behalf of the TSL 06/07 committee, I would like to thank everyone who made the event on Thursday evening possible. Seeing all the members and guests mingling with the rest of the crowd, all the work that we've put in within the last year all seemed worthwhile.

As I will be leaving TSL in the hands of a group of people whom I have great respect for, I hope TSL members will continue to show them the same support and participation they have in the past year. Without a doubt, I am certain they will be able to conduct more fun and exciting events for the student community in Murdoch. Also, look out for more collaborations between TSL, MMA (Murdoch Malaysian Association) and ICS (Indian Cultural Society).

If anyone feels that he or she is able to contribute to TSL in any way, be it marketing or coordinating events, or just simply working with a group of fun-loving people, simply drop a note to tsl.pres@gmail.com expressing your interests. We will also greatly appreciate anyone who has suggestions as to how we can further improve TSL in the coming year.

All in all, it has been a wonderful year serving TSL as a President. The most valuable things I have gained from the past year would be great friends and an enriching experience.

The Correct way to Cook Instant Noodles

Seeing that instant noodles are a staple in every student's diet, I guess we take note of the information below to reduce the damaging effects.

Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for 3 mins around and then ready to eat.

This is the WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles.
By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG, it will change the molecular structures of the MSG causing it to be toxic. The other thing that you may or may not realized is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have taken the noodles.

So the CORRECT method, which you may or may not know, is to cook the noodles this way:

1. boil the noodles in a pot with water.

2. once the noodles is cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which contains wax.

3. boil another pot of water till boiling and put the noodles into the hot boiling water and then shut the fire.

4. only at this stage when the fire is off, and while the water is very hot, put the ingredient with the powder into the water, to make noodle soup.

5. however, if you need dry noodles, take out the noodles and add the ingredient with the powder and toss it to get dry noodles.

Hope this piece of information is of importance to your health in relation to eating instant noodles and please apply this cooking method with immediate effect.

I saw the mascot for TOYS R US, GEOFFREY the giraffe at Vivocity and i just had to wrestle with the children to get a pic taken with him. Being too paiseh to be seen, since i was after all the only one above 6 years old 'fighting' to take a pic with him, my guy friend went up with me! HAHA. super paiseh. he's damn freaking tall la!

What is your favourite animal?

Okay! In a bid to make the ignorant people know their animal breeds better, I'll start with naming my favourite animal. This, is a ZEBRA! And my dream is to one day be able to ride a zebra to work and at the same time have a giraffe guarding my house! (I like giraffes too but I won't fight with Eelynn for this one. Haha). So there!

Hi all! In today's post, you will learn about Bandicoots vs Rats. You might wonder why the sudden interest in these little scrambly furry creatures. Well you see, during our weekly TSL meeting yesterday, it became apparent that our Marketing Officers had some kinda affinity with one of these tail-carrying creatures.

Last Wednesday, 7th of March, The Singapore Link committee members and a few of our friends came together to have a pot luck session. Everyone brought some great asian food such as char kway teow, curry chicken, bak kut teh and char bee hoon. Candy also brought some of her yummy home made desert.

Hi everyone..

Sorry we've all been busy for a while.. Hope everyone had a great summer break, back in Sg or not.. And we're all prepared for a whole string of events for the new coming semester!

The TSL committee has been busy cos most of us have been working since we returned to Singapore.. And mostly, we've been busy with Pre-Departure seminars in Sg.. and spending a lot of time preparing the new issue of Facets!

Dear all,

As a conclusion to this semester, I would like to thank everyone for their support, especially since the new TSL committee 06/07 took over in August. We hope to receive more feedback (both good and bad!) from you about how we're doing and what you wish to see from us in future.

We will now take a break to finish up the final assignments and prepare for the (dreaded) exams. Immediately after this, we will continue to work on the upcoming issue of Facets 1/07. Mid-Autumn Festival 2006
We hope you all had a great time last Thursday at the Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration at the Tavern, eating the delicious desserts, mooncakes, and enjoying the light-hearted film. The TSL committee had a great time on that night, and we hope to have more of such celebrations in the coming year!

· Mooncake Orders

Thanks to all who ordered mooncakes from us! At the end of our mooncake order service, we have sold a total of 92 boxes of mooncakes. Thanks for your support! We hope to provide our members with more of such service in the future!

Kopi Kaya Toast 2006
The final event of this year for TSL! This year's KKT features an independent film, Becoming Royston, inspired by an original story titled Becoming Capa. The film revolves around the life of a young boy brought up in a farm, and his dream of becoming a filmmaker. Other short films made by independent filmmakers will also be featured. Keep posted for more details!

·Facets S1/2007

We're starting to prepare the new issue of Facets due for Semester 1 next year! We are looking for anyone who's interested in:

- Writing articles
- Contributing pictures
Or just about anything you feel that could go into Facets! The ideas and themes we have right now are just raw, but the shape of the new issue of the magazine will take place pretty soon when we have brainstormed more ideas. Miss playing with lanterns as a child and eating delicious mooncakes under a full-moon sky? TSL is bringing Mooncake (Mid-Autumn) Festival celebration to you! Aside from traditional paper lanterns and assorted mooncakes, there will be a wide range of traditional desserts for those with a sweet tooth and anyone who misses the taste of home!

Bring your friends down to mingle with fellow students, have a taste of homemade desserts (by our very own committee members!) and try a range of yummy mooncakes!

Welcome to the newly revamped Singapore Link! With a totally new group of committee members, we are committed to bringing Singaporean students together through social activities and get-togethers. The Singapore Link (TSL) is a support group—providing friendship and mutual support— making university life at Murdoch easier. We are not a Singaporeans-only club as we aim to spread awareness of Singapore’s multicultural identity and culture to all nationalities. May it be that you are looking to work or study in Singapore and want to find out more information and form networks; or just want to immerse yourself in our very uniquely Singaporean get-togethers, often with culinary delights— come and experience a slice of Singaporean hospitality.

Some significant events held in the past include a meeting with Singapore President, His Excellency S.R. Nathan and our First Lady in Perth, and a meeting by guest speaker, Singapore Minister for National Development, Mah Bow Tan.

All activities organized by TSL are non-profitable (we subsidise everything) so we rely mainly on sponsorship. Any sort of financial help is greatly appreciated by the Club. If you’re wondering, we’re all not paid for this.

If you haven’t already joined, what’s stopping you? Membership last the whole of your stay at Murdoch University, with no need for renewal. Drop by, say hi!

MAMBO 2 – 25 Aug 06
We have been busy preparing the tickets and posters for the biggest event of the year, brought to you by UWA, Curtin, ECU and Murdoch.
Tickets are being sold at the TSL booth (Thursdays) and from committee members. Posters and flyers are up all around campus.

Raffles Ball 2006 – 22 Sept 06
Posters and tickets are in the midst of printing and we’ve been meeting up regularly with the working committee from the three other universities to work on bringing students the best entertainment this year!

We are in the midst of renewing our sponsors to bring our members greater and better discounts, at places that students most frequent. Keep posted for a list of discounts that are available starting 1 Sept.

NEW TSL membership card
After we’ve contacted a new list of sponsors, we will be ready to release our brand new TSL membership cards! For existing TSL members who have the sticker at the back of their student card, they may come to our membership drive (at the booth on Thursdays) claim their new TSL membership card, personalised with your names on it.
